Hissing and Other AC Noises You Don’t Want To Hear

One of the many ways that human beings can be alerted to a problem with something in the world around them is by detecting odd noises. This is why, when your car starts to make a strange sound, you know to take it into the local car garage to get it checked out. This is also why strange sounds coming from your cooling system are one of the warning signs that it needs an air conditioning repair in Columbus, OH.

But what sounds are we talking about? What one person considers odd may be just a normal sound coming from a noisy AC to another. Not to worry, we can help you here. We’ll go over some of the most common noises that your air conditioner may start to make which are a warning that trouble is ahead.

Hissing

Hissing is a noise that many people may mistake for just another sound of air passing through the air conditioner and into your home. However, the reality is much different.

For starters, what you may be hearing could be severely hindered airflow trying to push through a dirty air filter. Thankfully this is an easy fix–change that filter!

If the filter isn’t the culprit though, you may have a bigger issue on your hands. Hissing may be an indicator that you have a leak or hole in your ductwork, allowing air to escape into your attic or walls before it can cool the rooms in your home.

In a worst-case scenario, the hissing is being created by gaseous refrigerant escaping your refrigerant line through a leak, leading to the need for a line repair and a refrigerant recharge.

Bubbling

Bubbling is another sound that may be created by more than one issue. In one instance, you may have a clogged condensate drain that creates a bubbling or gurgling noise when moisture tries to push past the blockage in the pipe. In another situation though, you are hearing air getting into your refrigerant line through a leak, creating bubbles in the section of the line where the refrigerant is in liquid form.

Rattling and Clanging

These noises are related to similar issues: loose parts! Rattling may be created when parts start to loosen in your system, such as a bolt or screw beginning to loosen in its housing. Clanging is what follows. When you hear clanging in your AC, you are hearing a component that is free and bouncing around in your system, causing a lot more damage than before.

Screeching

A particularly unpleasant noise, screeching is created usually when metal scrapes against metal. This can arise from problems in your AC that can include a loose fan blade scraping the interior of its housing or even a dry blower motor belt in need of lubrication.

All of these noises have one thing in common: they indicate an air conditioner in need of service. And for that, you can always come to the service guys in the purple trucks!
